Lucille Ball

I was curious as to Robert Osborne's reference to Lucille Ball's character, in that this role probably mirrored her real personality more than any other role. I am aware that Robert had known Lucille, but always suspected, that with the success and pressure of her television show and Studio, that a more strong willed (perhaps shrewd) business woman emerged. I Love Lucy, don't get me wrong, and enjoyed this Film Noir Lucy as well.

Actually, Lucille attributed most of her TV/showbiz success to her ex-husband, Desi Arnaz, who proved to be quite the shrewd businessman; she did, however, do the smart thing by sticking to the principles she had learned from Desi to keep her own career afloat after their divorce (though they still worked together behind the scenes as joint owners of DesiLu until Lucy eventually bought Desi's interest in the company).

Any one else find Lucy quite sexy in this film??

Funny, but I never really thought of Lucille Ball as being "sexy" before......

She was quite the babe when she was younger, wasn't she? :)

reply

No doubt - but she was already 35 when this movie was made, so she was also well preserved too.

reply

Well preserved at 35? WTF! 35 is still very young come on now!

reply

Actually she was only 34 when this was made (December 1945-February 1946).

Lucile Ball started her career as a glamour girl/pin-up. Only after aging out of that kind of role did she transition to a loveable goof-ball. She's been lucky to have 3 distinct entertainment careers. I think she played a lot of TV movie dramas after the comedy segment of her career.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

I understand she gave the go ahead for STAR TREK that makes her no 1 in my bk

Lucille Ball appeared in nearly 70 films (!) between 1933 and 1946.

That is a staggering number; during the first phase of her career she was an extremely talented and underrated performer, performing in many genre films and B movies. She did tons of work for RKO; she met Orson Welles as she picked up additional work doing radio in the late 30's/early 40's. She remained a good friend of Mr. Welles for the rest of his life (he would one day appear on her show).

I guess what I'm saying is she had the equivalent of an entire artistic career in the movies before I Love Lucy ever existed. And her film work is consistently strong, as exemplified here in The Dark Corner.

A great lady to be sure

She was in one of the 3 Stooges shorts, and was very sexy !

reply

We just started watching the film a few minutes ago and we said the same thing--she was gorgeous.

reply

Lucy was gorgeous in The Dark Corner. I always wanted to see more drama and less comedy from her and this is a fine example. Lucy did some Noir radio work as well and those performances are worth searching out for those who are interested.

I also liked her serious, low sounding voice. Very appealing!
