names

There seems to be a correlation between actors' names and characters names:

Charles Quigley/Duncan Richards Kenne Duncan
Joe Forte/Parker Eddie Parker
Kenne Duncan/Chambers Wheaton Chambers
? Steele Tom Steele
There is also a character named Sherman played by Eddie Parker. Is this a reference to director George Sherman?

I've noticed this at least once before.

You may have a point on some of the names. If the actor playing a particular part has the same last name as the character, that is probably the reason. In the case of Charles Quigley's character "Duncan," it could have been because of his particular profession. If he was a scientist or professional, then he would have a professional name. That's why the crooks were always named "Red" or "Blackie", it was a nickname that typlified their character. Linda Stirling's name was "Diana" which gave her a little more class. As far as Eddie Parker's character "Sherman," who knows. There was a Republic director called George Sherman, but since he didn't direct this picture and the kids wouldn't have known him, the attempt at a in-joke would have been pointless. Also referring back to Duncan Richards, there was also Duncan Reynaldo who was playing in Three Mesquiteer films at the time.

I had forgotten about that e-mail. From time to time there seems to be a game going on with chracters being named after the stunt men at Republic.

Several years ago I had a job with interview with a man named Stanley Price, and I asked if he was any relation to the actor. No, but he was a distant cousin of Vincent Price who he met at DC's Arena Stage doing his one-man Oscar Wilde show.

Price said he'd never heard of the actor, but when Stanley Price died, he said his wife received condolences from around the country.

I did have a friend once ask me if I was any relation to Charles "Larry" Woodall who was Ty Cobb's second string catcher and an extrea in some of Joe E.
Brown's baseball comedies. He was my father's stepfather. Larry once scouted Willie Mays for the Red Sox and told them he didn't think Mays was Red Sox material. I don't know if he ever regretted that decision, but that's another story.

See you at the movies.
