Belinski's agenda...

Adam Belinski makes a play for Betty Cream on the pretense of counseling her regarding the need to marry the Lawford character.

But she knows his agenda. His hair is combed and he's wearing a dose of cologne. He was making a pass.

He is rebuffed, and the next day he gives notes, leaves, and proposes to Cluny Brown on the train.

In my view, Cluny was his second choice. "The Honorable Betty Cream" was his first.

Or maybe.. he groomed himself like that on purpose?

To make Betty realise that she should marry Andrew otherwise spend a lifetime fending off chancers like him.

Belinski was clearly in love with Cluny from the first scene. She was always his number one. And you can't really blame him. Cluny was kind, optimistic, beautiful and handy around the house (even if her plumbing technique was basically to bash the hell out of the pipes with a spanner)

Betty did sit well on a horse, though, dammit
