The French copy is called La folle ingenue Cluny Brown, released by GCTHV on 6 April 2004.

There will be a Spanish copy soon, El pecado de Cluny Brown, Filmax Home Video (23 November 2005).

Thank you for the offer. I already got the DVD in French as I am of French origin and am registered with Amazon.Fr. Thank you for the info anyway. When I first posted the message in 2004, I hadn't found this version yet. Nonetheless, I'd still like a US release of this film with bonuses from the studio that released it (such as deleted scenes, etc.) Hopefully, they'll do this one day. Thanks again.

Ginetta, may I ask you to explain a quotation? On the sleeve of la folle ingenue, Truffaut is quoted: «Dans le gruyere Lubitsch, chaque trou est genial» (sorry, this keyboard doesn't do accents).

I understand what each word means, and I can see that a gruyere will have holes, but I don't properly understand why Truffaut says it like this. Is Truffaut changing a French saying? Something like "every gruyere has holes"?

Thank you!

reply

Hi

I think that it could be translated this way "In the Lubitsch gruyère, there is genius in every hole" meaning that he is a real genius or had many strokes of genius. Now, I cannot say if it's a French saying as I've never heard of it although my first language is French but maybe it might be a saying in France. I'll check this out and post another reply. Will get back to you on this.

Hi,
Sorry for the delay but I wanted to contact a friend of mine from France who works in communications. My friend confirmed to me that it is not a saying in French, at least not to my friend's knowledge. It is a metaphor and means what I already had wrote earlier that there is genius in every hole of the Lubitsch cheese - meaning that he is all genius - Truffaut was paying a wonderful compliment to Lubitsch. I know that he was one of his greatest fans. Hope this information helps you and that you enjoy this movie - I've watched it several times and I continue to think that it's simply marvelous.

Very many thanks for going to the trouble, Ginetta. French critics are always too subtle for this rosbif mind of mine, and I'm glad to have the words explained. And I'm certainly not going to dispute Truffaut's estimate of Lubitsch. This is one of my top-100 films. Wonderful script, Jennifer Jones, and plumbing! What could possibly improve on that combination?

reply

Totally agreed but I'll replace plumbing by Boyer if that's ok.

Hi - I like better your second translation. Thx.

Unfortunately - I haven't seen these movies. I only saw "Shoot the Piano Player" and "Jules et Jim" by Truffaut and probably some other that I don't recall right now.

Yes I love Cluny Brown - the wit and the excellent performances of all the actors - I'm a fan of Boyer and I like J.Jones a lot in this film.

Must go now.

For the record, there is a very good (Region 2) transfer out on BFI: http://filmstore.bfi.org.uk/acatalog/info_8611.html I have just finished watching it.
