veronica lake

I disagree with some here who say lake gives a wooden performance.she was
funny and sassy and incredibly sexy.she's also great in "I married a witch".

I, too, liked her performance. I can see how it might have been interpreted as 'wooden' but, in my mind, I thought she was just divinely cool and collected. I haven't seem many films with her and I quite enjoyed this one.

I agree that Veronica Lake is mostly a very unique presence, rather than a versatile actress, but I love her. I've seen her first three films with Ladd, including this one, as well as "Sullivan's Travels", my favorite performance of hers. In all, she's wry, sexy and nobody's fool. Perhaps without that versatility it was impossible for her to sustain a long career, but I do know she's a jewel in each of these!

Fanatic! I am so happy to see you and the OP give an assessment of Veronica Lake for what she was:

A very unique presence rather than a versatile actress.
And I LOVE HER, TOO!

We all love her. She was so classy !!!

I've read so many stories about how difficult she was to work with, all her problems. Don't care, I love watching her.

Veronica's character certainly was. She played the character as an intriguing and composed woman who naturally sparks interest, no wonder Johnny was attracted to her.

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.

I wouldn't say "wooden" although I know that what has been said by others but agree she was Cool. As in cold detached but playful when need be. She has a few lines that were bold and she delivered them perfectly-the people complaining about her haven't seen really BAD acting so in that -they are blessed.

I dreamt of a roaring river and a woman that was a fish. Dead she drifted, with red tears...

Yep, you don't have to look long to find bad acting in the films of the period, but I don't think I've seen it coming from Veronica Lake so far. I've not seen all of her movies and may not remember the details of all her performances I have seen but I don't think I've ever been seriously distracted by her acting.

I was looking to see her famous peek-a-boo wave in this movie. But I noticed that this was firmly in place.

She does have interesting face. And her performance in this is suitably flirty and casual.

I mean, there wasn't much character for her to play here. Her role was mostly to look beautiful. When she comes on screen the first time in "The Blue Dahlia", she's luminous. You can tell she probably would not have been able to handle more dramatic scenes but she is more than adequate here.
