It is part of the excellent David Lean Centenary Collection: http://hmv.com/hmvweb/displayProductDetails.do?ctx=285;5;-1;-1&sku =818696

I am not sure if a similar set is available in the US though.

I've been meaning to post this for a while. I hope this will make somebody as happy as it did me...

I wanted this movie on DVD for years, and in mid-2006 I decided to take a chance out of sheer desperation. The result is that I finally got Blithe Spirit on DVD and I didn't pay an arm and a leg for it.

Go to Amazon and search for "Blithe Spirit." [NOTE: Do NOT click on the "Buy it at Amazon" link on the Imdb.com page, because that usually won't pull this one up. Go directly to Amazon and search for "Blithe Spirit" and/or "Blithe Spirit import".]

In the list of results, you should see a version showing a gold box with "Classic Collection" in an arch at the top and the title "Uma Mulher do Outro Mundo" in red surrounded by the same cast images as on the Region 2 DVD cover. This is the Brazilian release. All the packaging is in Portuguese, but it's Region 0 (region-free) and the film itself is the English version. You don't even need to make sense of any menus to change the settings to turn any subtitles off, because the default is the subtitle-less English film. The Brazilian release is the same aspect ratio as the out-of-print U.S. versions (4:3, aka 1.33:1, aka full-screen).

As of today, there are two copies available for around $18.00, which is about what I paid for mine. If you actually do a Google search for "Uma Mulher do Outro Mundo," you'll turn up a bunch of places online, but they're mostly in Portuguese. But if you're fortunate enough to have a friend who speaks Portuguese, they could help you order from another source if there aren't any copies available through Amazon sellers. These copies DO tend to turn up on Amazon relatively regularly, though, so if you don't see one when you first look, keep checking back.

Other import versions that come up in the Amazon search may work just as well. I only have experience with the Brazilian one. If you decide to take a chance on one, just make sure to choose one that's Region 0 or Region 1 if you're in the U.S.

I really hope this helps someone out there, because I totally squeed the day I got mine. :)

Although television DVD players may only play region 1, you should be able to play any region on a DVD player on your PC. I rented a DVD that was Region 2 and had no trouble playing it on my computer. You do need to load the correct software for different regions.

A fair number of PC DVD drives have a limited number of region switches permitted. The driver software of such drives keeps track of how many times you change back and forth. Not all drives have this issue, but it is something to check for.

Also, if you look for them specifically, there are DVD players that will convert PAL and that are easy to make "region free". When I say "easy", I mean that for a number of them it is literally as easy as hitting a particular sequence of keys on the remote. These command sequences won't be in the owner's manual, but can be found on the web with a little googling.

If you invest in one of those then you can watch foreign made DVDs on your TV. I got Blithe Spirit when there was a good sale on a David Lean box set out of the UK (10 or 11 movies for 16 or 17 pounds; I would have to check because I also got a similar deal on a similar size P & P box set at the same time: one had 10 movies and the other 11, one was 16 pounds and the other 17).
