An Incidental Matter

When Charles goes to Madame Arcati's residence, to discuss matters involving Elvira, he's wearing a blackstrap on his arm. Why is this exactly?

Traditionally a black arm band means that you are in mourning for somebody, in this case it is Elvira. After Ruth is killed he sports two, one on each arm which of course is a gimmick, but it does add to the humour of the play. (Normally you would always wear one black arm band only, on your left arm).
