Goof in plot

Because the film makers wanted to open the film up. In other words make more settings for the film, rather than everything being on one set (as in the play). They moved the seance that brings Ruth back to Madame Arcati's house. This means that Edith wasn't in the house (as it were), in terms of the story this makes no sense whatsoever.

*** spoiler alert ***

Actually I was just thinking about this... It could be really Charles that summoned Elvira and Ruth since he was present on both occassions, even though he already explained till he's black in the face that he didn't. Or perhaps he did it subconsciously like Elvira said.
The script plays on the twist that Madame Arcati brought the spirit back but in the end it seems that it was Edith, or is it??? See my other question about the unseen spectre :)

The play is a mess. Completely overrated mess.

youre an idiot-the play is a masterpiece and everyone agrees with that

Graham Greene called it "a wearisome exhibition of bad taste."

Graham Green of course was one of the greatest of English novelists and critics of the period.

Not everyone agrees unanimously on anything with the possible exception of your incredibly bad manners in this post and the previous one.
