I couldn't quite understand everything due to the accents.
What happened that left Charles in a sling, Edith in a bandage, and the gardener in an ambulance while Ruth was at Madame Arcati's?
And why was Edith so grumpy? Did she call the spirits sub-conscientiously? Why?

Ruth thinks Elvira wants Charles dead, so she can have him for herself. Which is why Elvira sabotaged the car. The gardener, housekeeper and Edith were just collateral damage.

I often have the same reaction when listening to American.
I have to "rewind" whatever US show or movie that I'm watching more often than not to decipher what they are saying.
I am originally from England but moved to the States and have lived here over a couple of decades.
I suppose it depends on what we grew up listening to.
