Muni was looking a little long-in-the tooth for Baxter's character

Yep, noticed it today on T.C.M. and looked it up here later:

-Paul Muni 51 years old
-Anne Baxter 25 years old.

Yes, it showed too.

reply

Yup, but it was the same thing in many other films back then, so it wasn't unusual.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

Hey, I'm not the one who committed the unpardonable sin of getting older. (to quote TCM)

People nowadays seem to really frown on that, but I think they're putting their modern bias back into a time period when it was more acceptable, which I think is unfair. People should judge by the time period the movie was made in.

reply

Maybe the character liked older men. She worked for the judge, and evidently fell in love with him. Remember she loved the judge before the convict's ghost took over his body.

People didn't freak out about that kind of stuff back then.

"Who's running this airline?!"

reply

Yeah, maybe they didn't "freak out" but it was sexism at it's best.
I don't care about the date, I know well how things WERE "back then"---doesn't change a darn thing, still is what it is (to me, WRONG because it IS sexist!)

And why is that?

Because you know what, they WOULD freak out if roles were reversed.

That not only wouldn't be accepted then but is STILL lambasted today.

Yes, there are examples (I know they exist, not saying otherwise) but they DO take heat & you KNOW they do (Demi Moore was subject of jokes the ENTIRE time she was with Ashton douche-bag).

It's male-oriented, male-dominated society. They've run our country (certainly our media) since its been founded.

They, for the most part, MAKE the movies so it's THEIR fantasies we're most subjected to, rather than the female POV (which I support on rare occasion it's out there to see if only because I suspect I can relate better to production).

OH and lastly, perfect example is Dick Van Dyke, he's like 90 with a 44 year old wife!

SO gross it makes my skin crawl, I don't care what ANYONE says about me sounding intolerant.

I'D LOVE to hear the incessant cries if their roles were reversed.

Try to tell me I'm wrong (some 90 yr old FAMOUS actress with 40 year old guy! She would NEVER hear the end of it. She'd be the butt of every single joke but worse, I don't think ANY sane man would entertain being with her).

Why is it I NEVER hear one single defamatory word on good old senile Dick?

And no, hold your fire because I'm NOT wrong.

Nor am I some ugly women's libber since surely that's the first thing to come out, an attack---that's inevitable when a woman's observation, insight, or knowledge is just plain RIGHT.
OK, I should quality that...for certain men (yeah, just little, insecure & often not very bright)...to them we are scary...
oh NO, a strong, smart, independent woman using her voice!.

For the record, I always enjoyed D.V.D. but BEST when married to MTM. (lol!)

And this vapid young lady needs to grow a spine & take care of herself than play nursemaid! Yes, I DO take it personally & think these idiots are downright humiliating to my own sex!!

He could have passed for a guy in his mid-thirties, I really didn’t notice it.
