The comedy scenes - SPOILER

For a British film of the mid-1940s, this had a surprising number of very funny scenes that I didn't expect from the producers or the era. The unexpected interposition of terror and comedy (the "funeral" procession) is Hitchcockian!

The final bathroom struggle was brilliant in its staging and timing. The police trying to ram the bathroom door down, while the innkeeper struggles to simply unlock it to prevent damage to his property. The innkeeper watching the mêlée from the doorway, catches the bar of soap tossed his way calmly wipes it off and puts it in his pocket for safekeeping. One has to understand the value of soap during WWII! That was slapstick comedy at its best.
