The boxers were pathetic

It was painful watching the "boxers" in the film. Not one of them looked like they had ever boxed before.

That said, boxers get creamed by grapplers.

Pretty painful movie to watch. Raw war propaganda. Americans are depicted as monstrous. Kurosawa admitted in his autobiography that he didn't have the courage to resist the absurdities perpetuated by the Japanese government. The presentation of the Americans was crude. The American sailor beating up the driver at the beginning. The American boxer with the the robe reading "Killer" on the back.

Mistake: as Sugata leaves the American embassy, the doors have American flags on he door. They have 48 stars on them, which was wrong for 1883.

American film makers have done the same thing though. Just watch Rocky IV.

Now that is pathetic.

The flags have 35 stars on them, not 48. Which would have been accurate for the Embassy ten years earlier, but by 1887, when this film is set, the flag had 38 stars on it. Three years later, in 1890, there would be a 43-star flag. One could argue that the Embassy was slow in changing the flag design on its door.
