Personally, I think "The Court Jester" is his best movie. But this ranks right up there behind "The Court Jester".

reply

I couldn't possibly pick between Court Jester and this one, they're both my favorites, though I will admit this one is a little better on not re-using the same frames over again.

Has a lot of great one liners....

"A child of five would understand this. Send someone to fetch a child of five."

this is a rip-off of a groucho marx line from DUCK SOUP. really the only thing different is the phrasing is "a four year old child" rather than "a child of five."

i don't have anything against this movie, but if that's one of your favorite lines, it's from 12 years earlier.

"Rampart: Squad 51."

IMDB can be quite confusing with the signatures at the bottom, as I reckon the Duck Soup quote is just their signature. And I guess they didn't have a one-liner from this movie to give.

Done mine in italics! :

"So this is the planet Houston"

are you old? I had a tough time getting through this one. Danny Kaye is awesome, but his films haven't aged well. The gags in 'Kid From Brooklyn' were better...

reply

Haha, I wouldn't classify myself as old, I'm 23 years of age now, and was 16 when I made that first post. My tastes are somewhat unusual, but I like to think that this is a reaction to the gradual decline in (popular) artistic talent we have witnessed in the last 20 odd years.

reply

I agree, but I still don't think this is a good movie. It's very silly. I like silly, but I like clever too. That part where Vera-Ellen tapped on her toes was pretty good, though.

This and The Court Jester are my all time favorites. The first time I saw these films, I had tears running down my cheek from laughing so hard. :) Granted this movie was a bit better than the Court Jester, but both are equally funny :)

reply

I've just seen this film for the first time. I've never seen Danny Kaye so entertaining as he is in this one. This needs to be shown more often.

saw it to for the first time and the opera segment was hilarious

it will be on again, bbc tends to reshow the same films

potato salad?

reply

I'll be scanning the BBC2 schedules for a repeat of this film. I liked Danny Kaye's Edwin character and his "potato salad." And the park scene.

reply

Cant believe Edwin stood up the elegantly demure Virginia Mayo leaving her alone wearing her frilly apron waitng for him by the phone whilst he tries to fetch potato salad.

reply

I hope that Edwin eventually got his potato salad. With plenty of mayo to go with it.

reply

If this is one of Kaye's best I would hate to see some of his bad films!

It's that man again!!

reply

i think this one is very amusing, but The Court Jester is my favourite.

I think The Court Jester is his best film.
