I just watched this and if an explanation was given it went right over my head. (I did nod off a couple of times--esp. during the hypnosis scenes.) But what was the reason given for murdering all those young women? And why cut off their fingers?

The reason was simple blackmail. They would murder the women, cut off their fingers, then using a combination of the fingers and hypnosis, convince wealthy individuals that they had committed the murders in order to get their money from them. Pretty diabolical, right?
