one of the rare films to bring me to tears

just saw it and really had me crying in certain parts especially when she reads the poem about her father. i grew so attached to his character and was not expecting that. anyone else feel the same during that scene?

I recently rediscovered this film and there is something about it that just gets to you. Such rich old Brooklyn characters. The scene in which Katie begs the doctor to just list 'pneumonia' on the death certificate is so sad. Nice touches like having the grandmother live in Sheepshead Bay which in the early 1900s was a pleasant seaside community, a long trolley ride from Williamsburg.

Francie would have grown up in Brooklyn at about the same time my Italian immigrant grandmother was growing up across the East River in Manhattan. The movie depicts a Brooklyn that was gone even by the year the movie came out in 1945. Ironic but the neighborhood depicted in the movie, Williamsburg, is now an upscale area home to luxurious high rise apartment buildings.

Too bad this movie is apparently not available as a standalone dvd/Blu-ray.

My wife is NOT a fan of classic black and white movies. I am. One night I guilted her into watching this movie as payback for making me watch some movie she wanted to watch. Well...she cried throughout the entire thing!!! She had to admit that based on a great story, fine acting and excellent writing, they created a movie that moved her to tears. No special effects magic...just raw talent!!

Regular naps prevent old age, especially if you take them while driving.

I've been tearing up reading the user reviews and this post in particular. I need to see this again to bring me down to earth. Thanks.

just watched it again about 2 months ago and it made me tear up again. on a second viewing no less, no movie has ever done that. there's definitely so real about this film that just strikes to the heart.

I cried but was trying to hide it from my wife.

Saw it last month on TCM and it immediately became one of my favorite movies. Agree on it being emotional. I never cry in movies but I nearly cried three times in this (the scene where the Dad tries to tell her he wants her to drop out of school, the whole childbirth scene, the scene where the girl holds the flowers her Dad saved to get her and cries)

I watch this two or three times a year. It's a must see during the holidays.

Yeah, I had actually seen the Christmas segment before and forgot about it until I finally saw the whole thing recently. I'm going to add it to my usual Christmas movie rotation going forward.
