who knows? rights for animal lives on the movie set were not like it is not..back then i believe you could kill/injure an animal..i think there was one movie back in this time period where they killed at least hundred horses..when they tripped them to make them fall..and fatally injured themselves..but i'm not for sure about this one..cause i did see a "aspca" thing at the end...but i'm not sure how much they were involved back then..or what..

"hey howdy hey! thats me on a yoyo!"

Sadly the killing/injuring of animals was the norm back then. Animals were seen as expendable, so therefore they did as they liked with them. Look at the Jesse James film where the two horses went over the cliff. They both died as a result of the fall. Bite the Bullet (a lot more recent than TSoF) was horrifically cruel to horses. Again they put a horse over a cliff edge, sedated a number of them and used trip wires for most of the falls. To Kill a Mockingbird used wires to yank the legs from under a dog when Atticus shot at it. I believe they actually broke one or more of the dogs legs. And animals like birds and rodents were continually euthanized whenever a production needed a dead one. I will never consider old films as great or classics. They were cruel and barbaric. Most of them deserve to be lost forever. As for this, it wouldn't surprise me if the horse was actually killed. The effects of euthanazia often involves a seizure like reaction.

I'm sure the horse that played The Albino was NOT killed. Horses that are trained so well they can be used in movies are not a dime a dozen. Many were in many movies and were quite valuable. There were young children on the set as well. I can hardly believe they would actually kill a horse for realism in a kid's movie...

I'm glad that you said "the horse that PLAYED the albino" because it wasn't actually an albino, it had blue eyes, ALL albino mammals, including humans, have pink eyes!!!

reply

Bzzzt - WRONG.

"Albinos" or animals afflicted with albinism can, indeed, have blue eyes (characteristics are white coat color, pink mucous membranes and light blue or pink irises); however, the horse that played "The Albino" was probably a cremello horse of some sort.

The horse's "name" in the movie was "THE Albino" based on its looks and appearance of being "albino" or carrying the albinism gene.

reply

Im not totally sure on this, so correct me if Im wrong, but horses dont carry an Albino gene do they? Im pretty sure all horses who look Albino are really Perlinos, Greys, Cremellos or very light Palominos. The Albino looked more Perlino in some shots but in others looked like a Cremello. Thunderhead couldnt be a grey bc he was born light-colored. He actually looked like a palomino in the scenes of him as a foal and you can see a star on his forehead, but it isnt on the older version of him.

Anywho, I just wanted to say that even if a horse was "white" and had pink eyes, it wouldnt be an Albino bc Albinism isnt possible in horses.

Look at the Jesse James film where the two horses went over the cliff. They both died as a result of the fall.

For what it's worth, only one horse died, They used two cameras with different angles and filmed it only once

To all those who remarked on the treatment of the horses:

After the standard opening credits but before the film begins was a statement gratefully acknowledging the participation of The Humane Society. I don't remember the exact words used but it was probably along the lines of no animals were hurt or abused in the making of this film.

reply

The filming was monitored by the American Humane Society. No horses were killed.
