Williams posturing was too much

It was so obvious that the studio wanted to use her taking so many dives and what a good swimmer she was. The story line was so silly and the way they set it up for that opera singer to show his chops and the young man singing "Because"...Not one of MGM's better musicals by a long shot. BTW, how could Van Johnson ignore the gorgeous Gifford, was another joke.

I love this movie. I think of it as more of a romance than a musical. And as gorgous as Gifford was, Williams IMO is more gorgous, besides, that's what the script called for. This may be my favorite Esther Williams movie.

This a a wonderful romantic, musical. Great musical numbers were woven seamlessly into the story line... simple, predictable yet sweet. One of my favorite of the genre.

I agree with both Owlnut and Attuci. This film was great, so simple and innocent. And the songs were very good, especially "Viva la compaigne" that Melchior, Esther, and others sang in the bar.
