The wrong Robert?

Just saw this film on TCM recently and can't help but think this was more a role for Robert Mitchum than for Robert Young. As much as I love Mr. Young, this just didn't seem like his type of role. He has been quoted as saying that moviegoers just wouldn't accept him in certain roles and I think this was one of them.

I just saw it today on TCM, and actually thought he pulled off the role pretty well. Although you do rarely see Robert Young playing the part of a cad, and he is obviously best known for his goody-two-shoes starring appearance on Father Knows Best.

That said, can understand your point about perhaps how Robert Mitchum could have been better cast to play the role of Hank. Or better yet, another "Robert",,,being Robert Taylor, who I think more of a ladies man during that era.

If Robert Mitchum had played the role they probably would have changed the ending too. With Young playing the role the writers also gave us a 'Robert Young' ending.

Watch for TCM to show the film.'Crossfire (1947)'. Both Robert Young & Robert Mitchum are in it along with the great Robert Ryan. Even though Young played the good guy most of the time, he's done bad guy roles and Mitchum has played plenty of good guys.
