Some things I learned from watching They Were Expendable...

1. The Americans were ill-prepared to enter into a world war in 1941.

2. It was quite okay in 1944 to employ a composer to write the score for this movie, who stole tunes from five other composers plus interpolated another two traditional tunes, he himself having composed very little music but taking all the credit – and, presumably, the money.

3. The squadron, or whatever it was, had the means to employ a full-time person just to do signwriting; his job was to put up large signs at frequent intervals, all impeccably written/printed, displaying very recent events with the number of people and boats lost, and adding new military orders.
