Help! What did the broom on the mast......

....mean. That they got a kill, or that they had their mast shot off? Some other explanation?? I thought it might mean a 'clean sweep'.

reply

When a US Navy vessel flies a broom when returning to port, it means that she had a "clean sweep", sinking every enemy vessel she engaged.
