Tarzan's worst... (Spoilers)

A few years ago, Turner Classic Movies showed all 17 films in the Tarzan series. Although I had watched them all, I'd completely forgotten about this one. A few moments came back to me as I watched, like the debut of Brenda Joyce as Jane, Tarzan rescuing the Amazon woman, and the shadow of Tarzan raising the treasures in his hand to prevent the execution. Overall though, it was just miserably boring.

I wonder what was going on in my mind when I saw it the first time. Usually, even the lesser entries have something exciting. This one had some nice looking women in Amazon costumes, but there just wasn't anything going on. I think even Tarzan's Fight for Life was more entertaining than this.

I didn't think this one was TOO bad by B-picture standards. Of course, it's hard to overlook the fact that Cheeta gave the most far-ranging performance: fear, anger, slapstick, thoughtfulness. The humand seem mostly bored or embarassed.
And it's one thing to have an all-white Amazon tribe in what's upposed to be an African colony, but this one is ruled by a short, petulant old broad with a thick Russian accent. Huh?

May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?

I can tell you've never seen The Wolf Man. She played Maleva in that one.

Anyway, yeah. When the series shifted from MGM to RKO, they made the weird decision to have white actors playing the natives. I guess they were supposed to be Arabic, but it's not like Middle Eastern people are exactly associated with the jungles of Africa.

RKO had black actors playing the African natives in Mighty Joe Young. I don't get what was so different about Tarzan.
