7.0 rating on IMDB ?

I just saw this movie and gave it it a 2/10 rating. The plot in this movie was thinner than Twiggy and I am surprised at the end they didn't all stand around the piano and sing Civil War era songs with the Bradley family from Petticoat Junction.

Since this movie received a 7/10 rating on IMBD (along with many other bad movies with fairly high ratings) I have a sneaking suspicion that people at IMBD tend to just vote for movies they like and not the ones they don't like. Can anyone ever remember seeing any movie rated under 5 on IMDB for that matter ?

I did not write this to denigrate those who liked it (each to his own I say) but to question the value of the IMBD ratings which I will disregard in the future.

I'm going to watch Picnic next - hopefully it will warrant at least 3/10 from me :)

cheers

nearly four years later for a response, but here goes ....

There are thousands of movies rated under 5; check on your account, under your ratings history - then use their cue to check out other movie titles and look at the IMDb lowest rated.

This is probably usually a personal rating; people might use different reasons for their numbers, but the IMDb number represents a composite value for those who chose to rank the film. What other system of judgment could you suggest, besides people expressing their taste? (for example, I've rated over 2,700 films, and fewer than 50 have gotten a 10 from me).

Well, I think this is something that we all learn at some point in time. We learn that other have other tastes. Some people love movies we hate. Some people hate movies we love. It's reality. Trying to make sense of it is a waste of time.

It goes without saying, but people generally see movies they think they'd like, so perhaps some votes are inflated. On the other hand, any new release has a huge bloc of 10 and 1 votes, so I suspect there's a lot of vote-stuffing.

I'm not big on musicals but I love state fairs, and I found this absolutely delightful – both for the plot and the music. 8/10 stars from me.
