The juke box! (minor plot point revealed)

I was utterly intrigued by the strange juke box that seemed to have a person with a record player and a stack of discs inside...
Was tis device real? Or a rather surreal invention of the film to give a plot device for someone overhearing a name...
I can see the possabity of having a real live person spinning the discs by request in a diner that couldn't run to an automatic juke box.. but to fake up one?
I'd love to know more about this if anyone has any idea

I'm fascinated by the jukebox as well. But if you finish the movie you'll see that the operator isn't inside the jukebox, but operating it from another location. I too am wondering if the idea of a "live jukebox operator" came from reality or was pure imagination, I tried a Google search but couldn't find anything.
