I'm with you, Ingrid Bergman was a fine actress but she was ludcriously cast here as a France-raised girl from New Orleans. Bergman was also not that much of the coquette type. This would have been a better movie with almost any other major actress from the period. I don't think they were going for a "Hedy Lamarr" look as a rather blatant attempt at Warners' making this their GONE WITH THE WIND and Ingrid given a Vivien Leighesque wig although her performance actually reminded me more of Joan Bennett, who came close to getting cast as Scarlett. I think Hedy would have been too "foreign" too though for the movie though I could see a glamour girl like Rita Hayworth or Dorothy Lamour in the role since it wasn't that taxing but someone like Bette Davis or Claudette Colbert would have been better.
