I know Flynn is usually associated with more of the swashbuckling stories and I enjoy those movies very much. Yet, this is a great Western and he does a terrific job in it. It shows that there was more range in his acting ability.
San Antonio, Virginia City and Dodge City are 3 of my top 5 westerns. The others are Tall in the Saddle and The Angel and the Badman with the Duke. I wish they would release San Antonio, Virginia City, Silver River, Montana and Rocky Mountain on dvd as a collection.
A great big classic A western, with beautiful stars, good villains, lovely 3 strip technicolor, great sets, good musical numbers, the biggest shoot-out in the west and pacy direction ... what's not to like?
Not to mention Max Steiner score! All the music was swell. I couldn't work this into my already too-long review, but it was impressive the way Steiner's score would suddenly blast in at a dramatic moment without interfering with the continual music and songs in the saloon and dance hall. The amazing artistry of the old big studio pictures.
Always one of my favortie oaters since first viewing about 50 years ago, as is Virginia City. Don't understand why Flynns westerns are not better appeciated by the younger crowd.
They can't make 'em like this any more and wouldn't have the class to do so if they could.
