Jay Kirby aka 'Rusty'

Just watched the movie. Was curious about the cast. Notice actor Jay Kirby who played "Rusty" died in 1964 at age 44. Searched around but can't find out why he passed away at such a young age. Does anyone know what he died from?

Jay Kirby was in a serious car accident in 1963, which left him in a coma for a year, at the end of which time he died.
