A GG look-alike? I don’t think so…

I can’t believe that so many reviewers think that Robert Alda looked like George Gershwin.

On the contrary, Alda looked NOTHING like Gershwin – except for the color of their hair, perhaps. Have these people not seen pictures of GG? There is no shortage of them on the internet. There is not even a vague resemblance.

As far as Alda’s acting was concerned, well, I’m totally underwhelmed. The dialogue they gave him in this movie didn’t help much, either. To quote from Casablanca3784’s 2002 review, “Robert Alda's portrayal of him is a combo of cold, clammy, unemotional and tedious”. Suffice it to say that it’s no wonder he never became a film star. His son Alan is a far, far better actor than he would ever become.

Yep, it's been quite a long time since I watched an actor give a performance that poor.

On the other hand, he was not bad at pretending to play the piano. This is not a sarcastic remark, I'm really grateful when the actors take time to "learn" the pieces as much as they can.
