Shallow

His Rhapsody in Blue was a work of art, but everything else Gershwin wrote, was shallow. His piano concerto is dull, Porgy and Bess is a nightmare, and the only decent song he ever wrote was Swanee. I mean, Embraceble You? the song that contains the lyrics 'come to mama come to papa do'?!! Come on!

I'm surprised there haven't been a ton of resonses to your gratuitously opinionated (not to mention shallow) post. Gershwin wrote lots of Tin Pan Alley tripe, to be sure, but the second concerto and the American in Paris and Cuban Overture are highly regarded in classical circles. Ironically, in my opinion, Suwanee is one of his least admirable efforts.

Try to get a grip on your vitriol.

Jeff, you're right on the money with your assessment of the first poster. And I was about to post the same thing about "Swanee". Had it not been for that part, I would have only suspected (and not been SURE) that he/she simply had no taste.

Thanks Clothes,

I guess the correct spelling of the song is "Swanee", even though the correct spelling of the river is Suwannee.

Thanks for the affirmation.

gratuitously opinionated

Nice! I've never heard those two words used together before, but they describe very well one of the things I hate most about how people act on the internet. I'll have to remember that one.

As for the parent post, I don't have strong feelings one way or the other, but I did LOL at "come to mama come to papa do."

Get on up.

He did a lot of great music period. P&B is a classic.
Sad how the movie of P&B was knocked down to a musical not an opera

The lead poster has to be joking, has to be.

Or just doesn't have any musical sense

I guess not! It's beyond impressive that George Gershwin has 474 credits (and counting) for films and TV shows which have used his and Ira's music.

reply

Yes, I've always found Someone to Watch Over Me, Summertime, Embraceable You, An American in Paris, etc., to be mediocre and shallow (sarcasm font needed here). Thank God he was available to point this out to us.

I guess the OP is just so sophisticated and intellectual; we're just philistines.

reply

Well you one has lived a long time when you hear somebody call Gershwin shallow, at first i thought it was the movie, which was not great, but no, he was talking referring to George. Well there is no accounting for taste.

reply

Or is an idiot.

reply

I agree with the original poster, but what bugs me is all the accolades given to hacks like Bach, Chopin, Brahms, and Mozart. I mean, could they be any duller? And what's all this about Chaucer, and Blake, and Dostoyefsky? Psh toash! Give me Lady Gaga anytime for high art. You tell them, O.P.!

reply

I love Gershwin's music, all of it!!! I can't imagine how you found this film or his music shallow. It was brilliant as is his music.

Oh, and aciolino, you don't fool us! 😎

Taste is such a personal thing. The OP's opinion is a valid as anyone's.

Her taste runs to such masterpieces as Thank God It's Friday.

I guess it's like looking at clouds. You see one thing and I see another. Peace.

OP is a troll no doubt.

reply

I've seen this film six or seven times, just to listen to all of Gershwin's music. Love it!
