How can and/or why a Marine get's a Navy honor?

As the old saying goes, "The Marine Corps is a department of the Navy -- the men's department."

I hope you were just trying to funny - I was a Navy Corpsman during Vietnam and assigned to the Marines as were many. For some reason I think we all thought we were men and those Marines we served with thought so too.

The Marines that I have known truly respect the Navy as well as members of the other branches of the armed services, even we Air Force people. The do, however, hate to admit it.

Rivalry between the Navy and the Marine Corps extends back to the days that the Marines provided security on board Navy ships, including guarding sailors in the brig. That may be the source of the rivalry.

Listening to soldiers downplay the Air Force can become very tiresome, but if I go a few weeks without hearing it I begin missing it. I have also often been the focus of "thank you"s from soldiers and marines for the close air support that we provide (except when we drop short).

Normally: Navy, Marines and Coast Guard, but can be awarded to other branches of the military.

The simplest way to remember how a Marine can earn the Navy Cross --- despite what the losers, below, have entered --- is very simple ... consider what the ADJECTIVE "Marine" means. It means, "of, or pertaining to, the sea, or navigation". That, in itself, should clue you in (unless you were born after 1980 and went to a government-run school, in which case, you have no clues about anything unless a government agency spoon-feeds it to you).

Simple: The Marine Corps is a body of the Navy ("Corps" means "body"). That is why it is called the MARINE Corps [emphasis added].

You may now insert one thumb in your mouth, and the other up your ass.
