Our Vines Have Tender Grapes

Please...I would very much like to see this film, but can not locate it in any form. I saw it as a small child and would greatly like to see it again...wondering why it has stayed in my memory all of these years!

If anyone knows where I can view it, obtain it in VHS or DVD, please contact me:

Thanks...

This will be shown tonight on TCM Nordic -- which means that it belongs to the Turner Classic Movies library. So it must also air now and again on TCM worldwide. Hope you catch it!

Hi there -

Keep checking the TCM schedules, because I have seen it twice now on that channel. I fell in love with this movie. Such a good, simple tale. A few times, you are caught off guard, emotionally.

Love it.

I hope this is the movie I saw as a child in the 50s, where a cow kneels down in a boxcar, witnessed by little Margaret O'Brien. Am I right about this being that film? Many thanks to whomever can help out with this!

Well, there's a circus caravan passing through town late one night. Edward G. Robinson brings his little daughter Margaret O'Brien to see them all while they're stopped to purchase feed for the animals -- but they can't really see anything because they're all riding in trucks. The father pays the elephant trainer to take it out of its trailer and do a few tricks for his daughter. At one point the elephant kneels down and picks up Margaret to give her a ride on its trunk. That might be what you are remembering.

Thank you for your reply. I figured out it's a different movie I'm thinking of, I believe it's called Tenth Avenue Angel (or maybe Tenth Street Angel) with M. O'Brien. It sounds pretty corny, but I think it's the one I saw as a child. However, I am happy to discover "Vines" and will try to find a copy to watch. I confess that little Margaret wasn't one of my faves, but I do love E. G. Robinson and Agnes Moorhead, so this film would be worth watching. Also Dalton Trumbo.

If you have TCM, according to their web site they will be playing Vines on Monday January 2 at 6pm EST and on Sunday January 15 at 10am EST. If you don't have TCM, Vines is available on DVD or as digital download from the Warner Archive:

It is Tenth Avenue Angel that has the scene with the cow kneeling down on Christmas eve. Another tear jerker with Margaret O'Brien...another one of my favorites.

Thanks, Meanger, That scene really impressed me as a child of 6 or 7 when I saw it on TV. It has stayed with me for over 50 years. Can't wait to see it again!

It was on Turner Classic last weekend (New Years 2012). Sorry, I didn't read this until now. I remember seeing this as a child, and it brought back memories of a simpler life. Something like this wouldn't fly today as people have to have action, murder, and mayhem. Agnes Moorehead with Edward G. Robinson is something else. He was a screen 'meanie' before and afterwards. "Key Largo" was yet to be. Agnes ususally played bitchy parts, but in this movie, she has a heart. With that being said, I didn't give it a very high rating. The plot is lacking . . . .
