For a film co-written by a notorious leftist (Lester Cole), there sure are a lot of references to the Japanese as "monkeys." I wonder how the Asian actors on set felt about this, e.g. Frank Tang, who played Captain Li, and all the non-Japanese Asian actors playing the Japanese. And how did the Chinese-American cinematographer of this film, James Wong Howe, feel?

They were the enemy, who snuck up on a U.S. military base and attacked it when our two countries weren't even at war. They subjugated a large part of China, other mainland Asian countries, and Pacific islands, and carried out heinous human rights violations on the inhabitants. They tormented and killed countless Allied prisoners of war. I cannot hold Allied military personnel or their civilian relatives back home accountable for hating the Japs and calling them whatever derogatory names their creativity could conjure. They were fully justified.
