the shadow of the hand

Pretty early on Julia is awakened in her new "home" by the shadow of a hand. Her bedside lamp won't go on.

What was that all about? Who's hand? I had to step out for about ten minutes, and maybe it was explained then?

I don't think it was explained. It could've been Ralph Hughes' hand, as he could've entered the room through the secret panel. Or it could've been her imagination, as she was probably being sedated. Or maybe even the cat's shadow?

The son was an obvious nut case! He should have been locked up. He seem to take pleasure in ripping up lady's lingerie with a knife.
He was being creepy stalking up to her while she slept. His mother had to rein him in serveral times as he was champing at the bit to get rid of Julia. To me it seemed more of a mental issue than just getting hold of the inheritance.

It was never explained. I assumed that someone from the household got in through the secret passage to scare her, to drive her into insanity. The mother and son might have asked one of those male helpers to do this.
