oh My GOD Zachary Scott was disgusting

...at least in this movie it suited his character.

But you are, Blanche. You are in that chair!

Although not nearly as good a film as "Mildred Pierce", his character was also weak and sleazy in "Flamingo Road" as well.

While Flamingo Road may not be as good as Mildred Pierce it is worth the price of admission to see Crawford spar with Sydney Greenstreet - JUST AMAZING - especially the slap and the line about the dead elephant - PRICELESS!!!

Yeah! 'Seedy and revolting' is the perfect way to describe him. He's so slimy. Literally, just look at his hair and skin. It's so oily it makes my stomach turn. And his voice has this ooze that just disgusts me.

But you are, Blanche. You are in that chair!

I agree; he seems like a villain from old Victorian melodramas.
I credit Michael Curtiz with making his character of Monte reasonably realistic.
Although it's hard to imagine an intelligent woman like Mildred falling for his incredibly lame lines!
Veda--well, that's another story. She was just as venal as he.

I know he was susposed to come across as the ultimate ladies man but I got very effeminate, borderline gay vibes from the character in addition to the seediness.

Thank you very much! I've always thought exactly the same about him, and he kind of ruins the movie for me since he looks and acts very effeminate, therefore I find him totally unbelievable in that role. He's the reason I didn't give the movie 10/10. I so wish they would have cast another actor to play that character...

He's great as the disgusting Monty, but see him in 'The Southerner' filmed during the same period; he is so good-looking and likeable in that movie.

Disgusting?
In real life Zachery was a fine man and a very good actor.
He has several theaters named for him in Austin, Tx and other areas.
And those eyelashes! I'd kill for eyelashes like that.

He is just an actor playing a role. Remember seeing him in an episode of this 1960s tv show "Naked City" just playing the city coroner doctor, alongside Roddy McDowall. Yes, he is rotten in "Mildred Pierce". And got his "punishment". But remember, just an actor playing the role.

He was a real sleazoid in "Secret of Convict Lake" with Glenn Ford. His character portrayals always irritated me; except for "Shadow on the Wall."
Check these two out....they are pretty good.

I've often wondered if Scott hated being typecast as a rotter in so many movies. His problem was that he looked like a rotter. He was handsome in a disreputable way.

"Handsome in a disreputable way", that really hits the nail on the head for me. I loved his portrayal of Monte and think he's quite handsome with a dark mysterious vibe. I can totally see how Mildred could be swooped up in his attentions. Remember its a credit to the actor that we come away disliking him. That was his role here.
