Locks back then aren't the same as they are today. Back then, a keyhole went all the way through to the other side of the door and could be locked from either side. You've never seen an old movie with someone being a keyhole peeper and spying on someone?
It was like a jail where, I believe, prisoners can not open the cell doors.
