Gutter talk, city speak...if you read Charles Dickens describe the underbelly of London's streets you can find some slang used in his stories.

There's an old movie serial called "The Dead End Kids" (might have another title) where the young men speak using New York burrough slang which also abbreviates and twists original words. If you read up on American language in the 19th Century you'll see that a lot of phrases and words from non-English became generally used terms (ie - "cinch", "Jambalaya", "ain't", etc)
