Jonathan Waring and Aunt Charlotte

Was anybody else as startled as I was at Jonathan's creepy confession near the end? "I've always liked Aunt Charlotte. And she likes me. I've always been her favourite nephew. And she's been more than an aunt to me. Even when I was a little boy, every night she used to..." at which point he's cut off by the train starting to move outside the window.

Yes! Although, "creeped out" in an amused way--the movie is far too wacky to take seriously, even incest references. And it's not the only one. When Jonathan says he enjoyed dancing with the girl (Durbin), Aunt Charlotte makes a noise and Dan Duryea needles her: "Jealous, Aunt Charlotte?"

Strange indeed.

reply

Ha, I agree with both of you - I noticed this and wondered...

good observation. I missed that particular foreshadowing.

I noticed that comment at the end of the movie too. I guess they cut it off in order to get it into the movie. I wasn't really surprised something like that ended up in a lighthearted movie.

The Waring family was supposed to be as dysfunctional as they get. They were all in a weird relationship with each other and the uncle leaves the money to an outsider. At the point we find out who the killer was, we need to know how messed up he is. That revelation kind of explains how he got that way and how long he's probably been dealing with a lot of crazy stuff.

Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]

Definitely. Seemed pretty out of place.

reply

Yes, very strange and startling in a light mystery-comedy with musical numbers.
