IKWIG Weekend on Mull, 15 - 17 October 2010

Robert Beveridge of Edinburgh University in association with the Powell and Pressburger Appreciation Society are organising a second IKWIG weekend on Mull to celebrate the 1945 film I Know Where I'm Going!

We (or some of us) will travel up by train, just like they did in the film. Then we'll change at Glasgow, just like they did in the film, get the local train to Oban and then the ferry, just like they did in the film. Of course we'll stay at the Western Isles Hotel, just like they did in the film. Others will just join us at the hotel on Mull.

When we did this in 2005 about 40 people turned up and we had a great time, visiting many of the locations used in the film. See reports & pictures.

Back in 2005 we decided that as it was a bit of a long way to go so we'd try to do it every 5 years. We've decided that we should do it again this year from 15 - 17 October.

Plans are now well advanced for the I Know Where I'm Going! reunion/celebration weekend to celebrate that iconic 1945 film on the island where it was made. Anyhow the weekend is 15th - 17th October and a trip to Corryvreckan is going to be one of the highlights.

We will be staying in the Western Isles Hotel, the one where they stay in the film. We will also be visiting many of the locations that were used in the film. Many of them are still very recognisable today.

The proposed itinerary is:

Friday 15th October:
Arrive at the Western Isles and enjoy complementary afternoon tea and scones in the conservatory.

7.00 pm 'Gin and Dubonnet' (as mentioned in the film) in the lounge before enjoying a 3 course table d’hôte menu in the dining room

9.30 pm A presentation of 'I Know Where I'm Going!' (1945) in the Lounge

Saturday 16th October:
After breakfast either enjoy the sights of Tobermory and Mull, or join Robert and friends and take the optional trip to the Corryvreckan Whirlpool. Please book this boat trip directly with Tony Hill at [email protected] . Price £50.00 excluding packed lunch which can be arranged directly with the Western Isles Hotel.

7.00 pm Swap stories over a glass of Prosecco in the Lounge before dinner in the dining room. This will be followed by a celidh in the conservatory.

Sunday 17th October:
A leisurely breakfast in the dining room. Followed by an informal series of discussions about IKWIG and the legendary film-making team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.

Enjoy a coffee and home-made shortbread before heading back to the mainland. Alternatively, why not extend your stay for a few nights longer – special rates are available (see below).

It promises to be a very entertaining weekend, so do call us if you'd like more information. For more information about Powell and Pressburger, do check out http://www.powell-pressburger.org

The web site for the Western Isles Hotel shows all rooms for that weekend as unavailable for booking on line. But if you call them on +44 (0) 1688 302 012 and say you want to be there for this IKWIG weekend then they will let you book.

It has been known to rain occasionally on Mull, especially in October. But at least the dreaded Highland midges aren't much of a problem at that time of year. Bring suitable clothing that can stand it being a bit wet & windy, even a bit foggy and cold. Bring a stout pair of shoes for the walking that we'll be doing but most of all, bring yourselves

Desperately envious of you all.

I'll have to be content with Google Maps/street view for the time being.

Quite a few people make the pilgrimage to Mull.
See http://www.powell-pressburger.org/Trips/Mull/index.html for reports and photos from some of them

I'm part way through IKWIG and having a pause. Just read your write-up of the 2005 anniversary celebration. Thanks for posting it on your website and linking it here. It's a great read. As it's so fresh in my mind I know the amount Joan's father, 'darling', gave her!!

An hour isn't an hour but a little bit of eternity in our hands

We went back again as a group last year (2010)

And lots of people have made individual pilgrimages there

The Western Isles hotel is under new management but they know lots about the film and appreciate the iconic status of the hotel to fans of the film. The phone box has a preservation order on it and has recently been repaired. Carsaig pier is still in a sorry state but there are lots of other places on Mull worth seeing. Moy Castle is still being preserved (not restored) but is still impressive

If you do make it there I'm sure you'll have a great time

Enjoy the rest of the film
