I was listening - not watching - did I miss some magical schenes

I just finished this movie. I enjoyed it, but I didn't notice anything magical about it. Admittedly I was listening more than watching, because I was multi-tasking a bit.

I didn't erase the movie yet. Is there anything I should go back to see?

Yes, all of it
It's worth paying attention to.

But when people say it's magical they don't mean that there are wizards or sorcery in it.

Yes, I would say try this film again when you have the time to watch as well as listen. IKWIG does not hit you over the head - it's more quiet and subtle, and rewards those who pay attention to its details. :-)

This is an insult.

There was some nice photography in the film. But nothing that I could really call magical. I was a little bit disappointed in the film. I was expecting some really atmospheric Celtic twilight stuff. But I just found it an ordinary love film with slightly quirky characters.

Powell & Pressburger films rarely deliver what is expected, they deliver much more, often in quirky ways.

It's also rare to find any reviews that fully describe them

I always try to catch P&P's films as I know that they have such a reputable following. I must say that their films are well made and different. But I've never really been totally satisfied with them somehow. Some scenes in 'The Red Shoes' I find particularly fascinating. I recorded 'I know Where I'm Going' and shall definitely be watching it again. But I just felt, on first viewing, that I would have liked a bit more folklore weaved into it.

Isn't it enough to have the curse in Moy Castle, the story of Corryvreckan, the Celtic Wisdom like the difference between not having money & being poor, the Ceildhe, all of the Gaelic being spoken and everything else?

I know that I am hard to please but I wanted so much more from those things that you mentioned. At no time in the film did I feel that there was some real supernatural Celtic twilight stuff going on. That was what I was hoping for. But I do admit that I was expecting too much from the film to satisfy my own personal taste.

Were you reading reviews and expecting it to contain what the reviews sent?
It's often best to leave the reviews until after you've seen a film

What exactly do you mean by "real supernatural Celtic twilight stuff"?
That's a bit of a vague term

I hadn't read reviews of the film. But it was just something about the wording of the storyline that I have read at some time that provoked my interest and my expectations.

What I was looking for, terming it supernatural Celtic twilight stuff, is something like this. Celtic myths contain a lot of stories of the lives of human beings being intervened by fairies and other supernatural beings. Something otherworldy impinging on people's everday lives. That sort of thing.

I thought the ending was nice and funny with the revelation of the full curse on the castle's interior wall. But it didn't really satisfy me fully. Many men have been chained to a woman through the centuries. No doubt a lot of them have seen that as a curse. But that is the way of this world. They haven't needed an incantation written on a wall or any intervention from the otherworld for this to happen.

Do you think that your expectations might have led you to expect a totally different film?

This film is about many things but it isn't really about Celtic myths. There are no fairies or supernatural being in it.

Why not enjoy it for all of the things that are in it rather than the things that you have been led to expect to be in it - but aren't?

I agree with you about expectations. It is not the film the film that I was anticipating at all. But I am still glad that I recorded it. When I watch it next time, I will hopefully get more from the film as it is, and try not be bothered so much about the film that I hope it was going to be.
