I Knew Onsow Stevens:House of Dracula Is Onslow Stevens

at last i can tell the world. I just did a piece moments ago on Onslow Stevens on IMDB under his very name. i found only one comment and that wasnt much. what a dishonor a shame this gifted actor not getting the respect he richly deserves but tonight he will. Ill write a shorter piece but check my comments elsewhere on Onslow Stevens in a message i left. This is TOMK im a tv film historian i knew 1000 performers in the 60s 70s meeting ,writing phoning . well I knew Onslow Stevens in 1973 in a series of letters we exchanged. his death his senseless death a beating in his nursing home wheelchair in 1977 sickens me We have here a batch of comments made by fans of House of Draula clearly Onslow Stevens finest hour anywhere ever on film. he never had a juicer role and what a role oh my god we got the 80s slasher type mad dr satantic demonic crazed maddest of all doctors minus the graphic violence here in 1945 in a daring approach. no gore no blood but still this Mad Dr was clearly something you didnt see as common fare in 1945. look at the makeup, thanks Jack Pierce look at the lighting the moody sets the music here is very good and the sets supreme in certain areas the acting is really first rate espescialy in 2nd lead unknown 41 year old Onsow Stevens. He told me he never understood why it was his agent sent him down to Universal to apply for the spot in the roll call. he wasnt a horror actor in fact Monster & The Girl 1941 he was fine but cast a crooked DA,. Now he wins the coveted role but he never dreamnt he told me the makeup Jack Pierce planned for him in the summer of 1945. he looked extremely frighning with the dark patches under his dimly lit eyes and the white patch makeup to give him that deadly psle look. but those eyes snd that disheveled hair and of course his voice all combined gave us truly the maddest dr of them all even outdoing any Jekyell & Hyde role. the film the last of the serious Frankenstein series isnt the best but its not as bad as one is led to believe. the film is fast paced comes to sataisfactory but rapid conclusion despite the many inconsistencies that are almost laughable but as a historian very partial towards the horror genre of 30s and 40s, let me tell you this actor portrayel as the good or mad Dr Edeman is first rate. he breathed life into it and enriched the sets with his stirring portrayel of bad over good. yes its ashame Onslow aka Franz Edeman did go mad and had to die but folks with out that approach we'd have no film. the emphasis here wasnt on the monsters all of tem no rather the true star had to be a different kind of actor an unknown who being unknown could make the role more believable. its my honor here to put in a good word for this underated actor. Strange, Atwill,Carridine Chaney even Jane Adams and Marta O'Driscoll all did splendid (WE still got the lovely Jane at 88 with us) and the highight the senseless brutal pre meditated murder of the innocent Ludwig Stossel as Siegfried driving his wagon int Visaria is unsettlin but powerfully done. look at the sets the music the creepiness of the predator approaching his victim climbing in the back of the wagon, look then at the FACE of Onslow Stevens his voice his mapped out plans to scare poor Siegfriend to justify his reason to kill becomes so evident. i knew very briefly in 1971 a year before he died at 89, the aging Stossel. he couldnt recall a thing about his role here nor hs acting career.his wife did all the talking but i knew Onslow and he told me enough .far more important i told him speaking for milluons of us horror fans THANKS ONSLOW , you will always be Dr Edelman what a role. I sent him an 8by10 photo of him as Edeman a stock photo on stage a publicity still hands stretched out ready to attack his next victime. he signed it, To Thomas this is a real pleasure. " No Onslow you are the pleasure. Gaz my good friend from Whales who does horror characters in figurines sent me a figurine of of Onslow Stevens as Dr Edelman recently. he captured the very esssence of the actors film role a crazed sick mad man vent out to destroy and kill poisned by Dravulas blood. a good dr who tried to do good but instead beyond his control, became a vampire carrying on where Dracula who he destroyed had left off. the blood contampination in the transfusion went bad no thanks to Dracula. this film had its flaws but it has its highlights and the highest tribute goes to the unsung hero, Onslow Stevens. word is getting about. from YOUTUBE to here on IMDB I along with Gaz will tell you fans of films that Onslow as Edelman in House of Dracula is worth the price of a ticket. see the film be objective overlook the flaws rivot your attention on a sight to behold the tragic sickly demonic monster mad man of a mad Dr , Onslow Stevens finest hour. mabe he didnt plan it that way but to be remembered for one role should suffice. we fans love him here in this mpvie. he never did anything better. thank goodness. Gaz I await your comments here and on Onslow Stevens pitiful IMDB message board. you and i and hopefully others will pick up and carry the torch and join the band wagon. HOUSE OF DRACULA a must. you never saw a MAD DR like this before in your life til maybe the 80s and beyond in the slasher era. im partial only to the true stars of vintage horror. This is not my favorite horror film Phantom of the Opera (Catch me there on IMDB with Claude Rains has that honor) but this role Onslow STevens as Dr Edelman is my alltime favorite movie monster vintage favorite. he still scares me. those transformation scenes from good to sickly AD are still powerful stuff. Thanks Gaz. lets show the world to enlighten them. Thanks Onslow and thanks HOuse of DRacula. The film is medicore but not Onslow Stevens as Dr Edelman. Man this man saves the day.that he did. goodbye til m next review thas everyone. TOMK

Yeah buddy, again I agree with you dude. It's like we discussed on youtube a while back, Onslow is the one good thing about HoD and although alot of my other heroes are in there too like, Atwill, Chaney, Strange.....AND....the Goddess of the 40's (lol) JANE ADAMS!!!! It's Onslow that steals the show here and really showed the world and all us horror fans that he was a force to be reckoned with! It takes ALOT to out-do the big stars, but Onslow made it happen and that proves he had the gift!
I only wish we were able to go back in time and tell these awesome Silver Screen Legends how much we love and admire them. My buddy Tom had the lucky experience of contacting alot of his heroes and heroeines and I wish I could do the same....man, the things I'd say to Bela, Atwill and Vincent Price.....it'd be a riot! lol.

Thanks again Tom for pointing the way dude :)

i knew folks when i joined IMDB a week ago that amng my many entries discussing films films actors scenes etc hollywood folklore & secrets, i had to spak up and py tribute with my good friend here to a forgotton actor. Seems everyone agrees despite hOuse of Draculas flaws, theres little doubt the saving grace is Onslow Stevens. wow what a perfrmance. one must be objective here and think of 1945 ad what this film had to offer. not just another mad dr movie? far from it imagine audiences seeing a mad dr like this . Dr Edelman what a character grim scarey demonic hateful bloodthirsty and the makeup supreme here. Very daring i its approach pushing realty to the limit in what a mad dr should look like. he left me enough of a impression to dress up as him in 1962 on Halloween . i can still see that mask cotton puffs, brillo pads eyeliner shoe polish and powder puff. too bad i didnt take a photo. The fact I knew Onslow 4 years before a savage beating in his nursing home wheelchair only makes this an even sadder story. the man should never had left us in uch a way. he wasnt deserving of such a thing and the coverup the coverup is a disgrace . only now is the word getting out. He was proud of this role but mystified he wrote me in 1973 why his agent sought him to audition for the role in the summer of 45. after al Onslow Stevens gifted as he was was no horror actor. he did us all proud what a film role. the makeup still withstands the test of time. that voice his mannerismns and certain scenes like the killing of Siegfried are rivoting. others have commrnted here lets hope Gaz with you and i truly getting the ball rolling we will get positive feedback. i knew close to 1000 performers from various fields but today its Onslow Stevens day in the sun. Thanks Gaz and thanks for immortalizing him and other horror icons in figurines. Yes if only you and i could go back in time and sit down chat with Onslow and tell him what a great job he did , well i did by letter in a sense but look at Zucco, Hardwick and Frye and oh yes a one timer ingrate Paul Lukas who think it beneath them they are doing a horror film, today its a top honor to be in its a moneymaker. but lets see wat the days brings us Gaz and if you & I can do something in a small way to enlighten the IMDB members here of how great Onslow Stevens is then i can sleep tonight. thanks everyone. Onslow your two number one and number two fans have just spoken i hope we both did you justice. rest your soul my good man. TOMK

People can say what they like about Dr. Edelmann (O.
Stevens) but by golly he was the only person who ever cured Larry Talbot!

hello Kahlerbob . thanks for the e mail reply to me (I think) i wasnt sure how to take it by the words used but i assumed you liked the fact Onslow Stevens aka Dr. Franz Edelman was indeed the only man ever to cure the tortured Lon Chaney Jr aka Larry Talbot. I never forgot tat for a moment. its move history. Stevens was a damn good actor underated and more important my good friend. for me to run up against my favorite horror icon before his tragic senseless death make it all the more touching. Thank you my Friend .look me up elsewhere here on IMDB for horror films if thats your forte. god bless. TOMK

Onslow really shines in the role and redeems an otherwise unexceptional movie. His voice is reminiscent of Orson Welles and he must have been a fine stage actor. Its hard to see how Boris Karloff - the original choice for Edelman, could have bettered it, though I could have done with Lugosi instead of Carradine as the Count. Its such a shame his starring role came in the final Universal horror, as there were no more he could have been cast in afterwards.
