What do you think of 'Here Come the Co-eds' (1945)?

Or Abbott and Costello in a Girls' College. Classic routines, and a hilarious new one where A&C clean up a kitchen, are linked by a weak plot and interrupted by tedious musical numbers. Peggy Ryan, as Costello's girlfriend, is a good tap dancer but her too-brash personality is grating.

Do you agree? Disagree? What do you think of it?

Dear J.Spurlin,
You are welcome. No I didn't just watch this film but they use to show it on a program known a Mad Theater with a gentleman hosting these movies known as
SuperHost(he was dressed in an illfitting Superman costume and he had a little
round and red circle drawn on the tip of his nose....he also wore hightopped
basketball sneakers).
I remember in this film when Bud Abbott and Lon Chaney Jr. play a version of the dice game with Lou Costello having swallowed the dice so they just take turns shaking the comic up and x-raying how the dice are laying inside of him.

I remember that scene! It's been a year and a half since I saw it (and started this thread). This isn't one of A&C's most popular movies, but it's still a good one.

Meet Frankenstein is my favorite A&C. There are still several others, including Time of the Lives, that I look forward to seeing.

Dear Justin,
Make viewing The Time Of Their Lives(1946) a priority on your must see list.
It is the most unique of ALL of Abbott And Costello's movies.
Take It Easy.

Here Come the Co-Eds is one of my favourite A&C movies. I really like the story, & I think its one of their funniest. The kitchen clean up scene just cracks me up, & Lon Chaney Jr's role is funny too. I also really like the "Jonah & the Whale" routine in the classroom.

I love the kitchen routine. Excellent stuff.

I'm a big A&C fan. Maybe it's because I started watching them when I was a kid, on the local station that played these oldies.

I still find myself laughing out-loud at a lot of the routines, even though I can see how some people don't find them funny. Who knows why - but I'm not the only one.

That said, I enjoy this movie very much. I love Peggy Ryan as Lou's girlfriend, and even like her routines - and yes, she is one hell of a tap-dancer.

I think that could be one of the things that's kind of cool about these movies. We get to see A&C and a lot of the popular entertainers of their time - people I had no knowledge of, except for these films.

I liked this one, the kitchen scene and the girl under the bed routines were great. I also loved Peggy as Lou's girl, I think she should have been in more A and C fare. Lou's duet with her was superb.

Do you understand the words that I am saying to you?

reply

I thought it was a great movie, definitely one of the boys' best films, I could have done without the musical numbers but the rest of the film made up for the musical numbers, I give it a 9/10, I loved the boat chase scene at the end and was really happy how the movie ended

reply

I sometimes get a little tired of the musical numbers, but they're so ingrained in me from watching them so many times, that I think that I'd miss them if they weren't there.

reply

I never really liked this film because the story line is all over the place. I would give it 6/10. There are much better A&C films.

It's one of their very worst. Musical number after musical number after musical number of girls singing with very little comedy. I was more aggressive with the fast forward button than on any of their other films. What comedy there is very boring and unfunny or bad silly (basketball game.) Jonah was done in A Night in Tropics and the wrestling scene was basically the boxing scene from Buck Privates, done much better in that latter film. The biggest crime is that Bud has NOTHING to do. Seriously, name me one moment where Bud is allowed to shine (beyond the Jonah repeat?) Lou does a ton of physical comedy but Bud is barely allowed to do anything.

It's not their best but not a bad film.
