Another overwrought Von Stroheim film

___Erich seemed a rather obsessed man, and went overboard no matter what he did in the arts, or even his personal life.
___This film is difficult to watch because you know from the beginning how it turns out not only because it's filmed that way, but because the characterization demands it. Especially for the 1940's, as in Double Indemnity, there's only one outcome.
___I must say, the leading lady, though not a femme fatal keeps more than three men dangling, a real purpose girl. And, Von Stroheim is just not believable as one of them. There is absolutely no chemistry from this man that he could have any emotions but sour ones.
