Penultimate scene

It could be argued that as Yvonne de Carlo had delivered so many punches (among other missiles) it was pay-back.

The scene may/or not be acceptable by contemporary viewers. The timing does not feel right. The heroine had just clutched her child (and husband) from death's jaw.

No, it was Johnny (Rod Cameron) who had rescued their daughter from kidnappers and a raging waterfall. After he delivered her back to her mother Lorena (Yvonne DeCarlo), Lorena rejected him, wanted nothing to do with him... which seems like a pretty inappropriate reaction, just after he's saved your child's life.

You say the spanking scene "may/may not be acceptable" today? Hey, that was a PERFECT ending! And the little girl's comment, "That means you LOVE her!" was spot on, too.

Cheers,
Dan

English subtitles are a MUST on all DVD releases!

Thanks for the reply Dan

I have to disagree with your interpretation.

Johnny created the danger by not allowing Lorena to follow Blackie. He forced her off the horse and pursued them. He had earlier humiliated his wife by flaunting his fiancee and her aunt. No wonder she rejected him even though the viwer was in no doubt of her feelings for Johnny.

He didn't deliver her back to her mother, he brushed her aside as he carried Mary-Ann back from the waterfall. He had done that also when he snatched his daughter off the bar. In fact, his behaviour towards women generally (Gracie too) was rather un gentlemanly.

Do you have a view on the gloves? Johnnie was the only man in the film that was wearing them.
