What's the word for Garance?

Garance is an interesting character. She is an orphan who goes from being a laundress to kind of a strip-tease performer (emphasis on the tease) to being a homeless woman who is sexually promiscuous and willing to accept help from interested men to being a mime performer to being the mistress of a count. She seems to adapt to her role and transcend it with a knowing Mona Lisa smile, like with her comment "I love everyone."

I would not call her a prostitute or a stripper or even a courtesan. There has to be some other word.

Interesting point, Ron. Garance seems to just drift, accepting whatever life brings. Perhaps 'a woman of fortune'?

"Flowers are essentially tarts; prostitutes for the bees.'

In the remake she's actually a stripper.

I think the older term was "adventuress." I always liked that term.
