Period Question

Did they really stop cars at the state line in the 30's and question drivers entering a state?

Just curious....Don't recall seeing that before in a film

Not only was this done in the 1930's and '40's, it's still done today.

I live in California and once or twice a year I travel out of state by car. When I return to California, shortly after crossing the state line, I am stopped at a state agricultural inspection station. The officers ask me where I am coming from and if I am bring back any fruits and vegetables or animals. Sometimes they will do a brief search of my car. They want to make sure no potentially harmful insects are introduced into the state that could damage farm crops. It was this same type of checkpoint that is shown in "Detour".

By the way, the U.S. Border Patrol has highway checkpoints in southern California and southern Arizona. They move the checkpoints from time to time, so you can never be certain where you will find one. They usually just wave me through without asking any questions, but sometimes there will be dogs sniffing the cars as they wait in line.

I've been stopped as many as three times in one day; once at the agricultural station and twice at border patrol checkpoints.
