STEERING WHEEL ON CARS

DID ANYONE NOTICE THAT THE STEERING WHEEL ON TWO OF THE CARS THAT PICKED UP THE HITCHHIKER WERE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE CAR? WAS THIS DONE ON PURPOSE OR WAS IT A GOOF? IT SEEMED STRANGE TO ME.

I also noticed a scene when he was hitchhiking, a few cars passed him going both ways while driving on the wrong side of the road. I thought that maybe they were filming in England or something! I would never have thought that they could have made the mistake of flipping a negative while editing, though!

Coincidently I'm reading an article about this now, some of the road clips were flipped on purpose by Ulmer, so that the image of Al moving in one direction would be kept throughout, going from right to left towards LA.

reply

Yeah, that's what Roger Ebert said in his book The Great Movies: that the negative was flipped in order to maintain the "film language" of Al traveling west.

reply

Yes, traveling west, except it was stupid to show drivers on the right side of the car, and Al hitchhiking from the wrong side of the road (not in England, of course)!
