It was so creepy the way Vera kept coming onto Al, and yet totally hot at the same time; it was almost like she was turned on by verbally beating the crap out of this loser. I guess she was a real dominatrix type. It must have been why she scratched Haskell. And Ebert's spot on when he says Al enjoys taking it as much as she loves giving it. Really rather a modern couple.
That actress sure had an appropriate name.

shareVera had a hella weird way of talking out of the side of her mouth. With her aggressive body language and messed up hair, Vera was definitely a fright on several different levels.
Vera definitely would have jumped Al's bones if the movie was made in the 2000s. Either by making him submit or hopping in his shower. She would have left scratch marks across his back, too.

If Al hadn't been so self absorbed , he would have seen a real opportunity there. As vicious as that chick was, she was definitely resourceful. How she wound up where she was at the point they met is a real mystery.

I agree that both Ann Savage and "Vera" were hot as hell, and her performance is absolutely brilliant and WAY ahead of her time.

As I see it, life had kicked her around quite a bit, and she was in the habit of kicking back. As hard as her character seemed, there was a distinct vulnerability there...like most of us, she wanted to be loved and accepted, despite being very damaged goods.

Ann was so perfect in this memorable film noir. She was a sexy, alluring, mean, and dangerous woman... just the best type of noir girl there is.

I thought she was great in the role. It was easy to believe she had already been through a lot at her relatively young age. I thought for sure she was an older actress playing a younger part but she was only about twenty four when this movie was released; maybe younger when it was made. She seemed way older.
According to her bio info, she was a lot different in real life. I also read in the Trivia for this movie that the two actors did not get along at all. That really helped them in their roles; the hostility between Vera and Roberts showed.
