Fishing at the Lodge?

When I'm watching classic movies and find something incongruous, I often wonder if it's just the context of the times in which it was made. For instance, in Conflict, it seems so odd to me that Bogart and Alexis Smith would go off to a vacation lodge and spend their days fishing and their nights dancing while his wife, her sister, is missing. I get that the doctor is trying to get them "away from it all" but wouldn't you want to be close to home in case there is news? At this point, they don't know if she is dead, or kidnapped, or run away on her own. It feels so unrealistic that people would behave like this, especially in the days before cell phones. Would this be considered more normal in the 1940s for some reason?
