Where has this one been hiding?

I am really surprised that I have never heard of this film. It should be more well known! Such a great story.
I just saw this on TCM for the first time this morning. Next time, I'm recording it!

Fasten your seatbelts.... It's going to be a bumpy night!

I couldn't agree more! My husband and I just watched it as well and we really enjoyed it a great deal.

Just because you can doesn't mean that you should.

It was just on one of our local movie channels, so I got a chance to see it for the first time.

At first it was hard to accept Bogie as an engineer, but as the film developed I got into his character. The ending was a bit expected, and illogical to the extreme, but up to that point I enjoyed the film, and the way it developed atmosphere and mystery.

And, could Sydney Greenstreet be more gay than he was in this one?

When your eyes are blind with tears
But your heart can see
Another life, another galaxy

This one gets lost in between To Have and to Have Not and The Big Sleep, probably because those two have Bacall & Bogey, and this one just has Bogey. That's not to discount all the great character actors in supporting roles in all three films. Still, the source material for the bookend films was better adapted than the source for Conflict.

In any case, it's well worth seeing, although catching it can be hit and miss.

I recently read that only one third of all old movies (thirties, forties and fifties) is available on DVD's or shown on TCM & AMC. Two thirds still rest in the movie studio vaults and I doubt I will get to see them in my lifetime :(. Some of them are in such poor quality due to their 70+ years of age that we might never see them again.

Interesting, but what does this have to do with "Conflict"...?

Oh Lord, you gave them eyes but they cannot see...

reply

I guess that Conflict is almost never seen because is on the vaults. Never on DVD i'm lucky to have a good original VHS of the movie.

This movie has been released on dvd format, approximately 2 weeks ago, by the Warner Archive.
It is available for purchase at amazon.

reply

Good! That means a real DVD release in Europe (at least in Spain that for some reason use to release stuff that no one else does). Going there next month. By mail is not so good because the shipping is very expensive from there.

reply

Perhaps.

Remember, this is a Warner Archive release, which is not a general, commercial release.

There are very few discs released, and they are the movie only:
no subtitles
no chapter indexing
no extras
et cetera

These dvd's are truly for collectors, rather than the general public.

I just wanted to let you know, so as not to be expecting something which doesn't arrive later.

Therefore, these Warner Archive copies may be the only dvd you see of this particular title.

reply

Yes. But especially in Spain, more then other countries that I'm aware of, They release many titles of the Warner Archives (and other studio vaults than only made DVD-R in America) on real DVD's with chapters, in english language, with removable spanish subtitles and even trailers. Have some Gordon Scott Tarzan titles and Tony Curtis movies, to name a few. I was very surprised and happy to find a lot of these old movies when i went there last summer.

reply

That is a perfect situation.

In 2007 we thought it would never be scheduled on TCM, so we bought it from ioffer.com. Finally in 2011 it was on TCM.
I watched "Conflict" a very long time ago in the early seventies late at night on German TV and was waiting ever since to watch it again...they don't make such movies anymore.
