Black Actors

I liked "Remember the Night" much better, but Fred MacMurray's black servant there was an offensive bit of comic relief. Black actors came off better here, including a black woman delivery person & a waiter (?) who was portrayed as literate and smart (the bit where the actual cook asked about the meaning of a word).

The way day-care was made into an amusing complication also has feminist connotations. Of course, women in the workplace during WWII was a big thing.

reply

Notwithstanding the fact that the factory women were German and, of course, this was World War II era!

reply

just a nod to loyal American Germans, perhaps

reply

Jmatrix: Point well made!! Coming from an American of German descent whose grandfather and father served in both WWI and WWII. :-)

reply

My mother (of Italian descent) grew up in a predominately German neighborhood in the Midwest during WWII. It was populated by many Germans who left after WWI. She told me that they often stressed that they were "fun-loving, beer-brewing, jovial Bavarians" unlike the "trouble-making Prussians" who were accused of "shaming all Germany". LOL

reply

My feelings too. Remember the night is a very good movie, but the way they potray the butler is cringeworthy. Christmas in Connecticut is a refreshing change for the times

reply

Remember the Night was overall a better movie I think, but the black actor is definitely portrayed better here.

Poorly Lived and Poorly Died, Poorly Buried and No One Cried

You're right, we should ONLY SEE dumb WHITE people. There's no such thing as
a dumb black person.

Lovely to live in such a PC world.

reply

That too, it a racist remark. However, all you have to do is watch any mainstream sitcom to see actors portray dumb white people, particularly fathers. Also, BET is full of sitcoms skewering Caucasians. The pendulum is swinging in the opposite direction these days, and will breed resentment just like it did in the past.

reply

Maybe they should've focused more on making a better movie than simply appealing to a handful of so called "social" warriors.

reply

I'm trying to imagine the mind of someone who would pick at old Christmas movies over racial or feminist ideology. Fascinating.

reply

Why? Are you a white male? LOL!

reply

It was a nice change.

reply

I always notice little things like this too while watching old movies.
