I lived in the Tokyo area for two years so find it quite odd that no one in this movie (Japanese or American) removed their shoes upon entering a house. In Japanese society to not remove one's shoes is a huge insult to the home owner.

A few years back I visited my daughter in Japan. She is married to a Marine and that is where he was stationed at the time. We had just left a restaurant where we had removed our shoes before entering. I remembered leaving something in the restaurant, so I went back to retrieve it. (This was after I had put my shoes back on.) I'll never forget my sweet daughter, the same one I changed diapers for as a baby, yelling at me because I had failed to take my shoes off when I went back to get whatever it was I had forgotten.
